Course: HPM
Name: Dean McBain

The course was most enjoyable and came at the opportune time considering my formal position as Systems Engineering Manager. The focus on achieving goals was also well presented, something I did in my head but now find more focus in by writing and detailing the objectives. The ability to plan time and focus on my high performance activities became important rather than being so technically involved, planning and focusing on team goals and objectivities. Delegation, dumping and doing what’s important. Thinking above the line and turning problems into opportunities. Certainly feel more confident and willing to express my opinion when it counts. Working on a project that should in the future benefit the company by eliminating excessive email, combing documentation in to one searchable portal, giving the ability to engineers to collaborate on ideas and projects within the one site rather than email and folders. I’m sure there’s more. Well done A

Although I couldn’t listen to my favour radio station for most of the year, I am quite like the concept of space repetition. It gives us extra time to learn. The LMA course introduced a lot of concepts and tools and they are kept repeating throughout the course. It is a very enjoyable learning environment and I have learnt a lot.

In general, I found this course very beneficial with respect to what is important to achieve success as a manager & leader and life in general. The workshops were instrumental in reinforcing the course content and in this regard I must say that Adrian was outstanding. I have attended many courses and seminars and I would rate Adrian as one of the best facilitators I have encountered. His positivity and ability to keep the workshops interesting, constructive, and engaging, was excellent. It appears that our organization has assumed that this course is best suited to new managers. However I believe that the course content would greatly benefit senior management equally and also help the entire management team have the same approach to leadership. The course has helped me focus on the tasks that are important and allow my organization to get the best value from my time. The importance of goal setting and positive expectancy in myself and others has resulted in tangible benefits. As a result of this course I have managed to secure a resource to delegate tasks to so that I can focus more on the more important strategic tasks that I am best suited for. This, along with regular goal setting, has seen my efforts in strategic planning increase dramatically.

I finally found myself applying what I had learnt from the course today in a one on one session with a team member. It stopped me in my tracks and changed to an above the line approach.

Generally the entire course content was right on the money for me. It enabled me to implement new strategies and reinforced that the process’s already in place are in line with a high performance environment. The entire course content was very relevant. The very first class spoke about the importance of having an ‘above the line’ (positive) attitude. This theme was conveyed throughout the course with many practical applications, tools and ideas from managers being the driver of change and process improvements to how to set the environment to get the best from your people. The LMA course has given me a firm foundation to succeed as a manager and enabled me to implement new strategies. It also reinforced that the process’s and structure already in place within our company are in line with enabling a high performance environment. The course has changed the way I conduct my activities using the HPA and goal setting strategies. The fortnightly course meeting were made very enjoyable and relevant by Adrian.

The best thing about the course for me is the tools that I now have available to me like delegation plans & feedback logs. I have utilised these often during the duration of the course & will continue to do so. I have found that I am able to better identify the tasks that I need to have direct involvement in & those that are low payoff activities for me. The course has helped me in setting goals around modernising our monthly financial reports to management which has resulted in more relevant information being available for meaningful management decisions.

The most enjoyable aspects of the course is the workshop. I enjoyed them a lot, fun and the course itself is an eye opening. The best success I got from the course is a personal one. It is the balance between work and personal time. I have now a better balance of my personal time which is reflected in my everyday work. I am happier at work and at home. It is now more peaceful and less stressful at work and at home. I am now feeling less guilty and not blaming work for taking too much of my time away from my family.

I have learnt to use goal setting as a means to get work done and be effective. I have learnt to take small steps to complete major tasks. Improved focus enabling me to reach my targets and objectives. The course has made me reflect on my current status and where I need to be. Realised and Identified my strengths and weaknesses. Working on my HPA,s (effective use of my time). I have been delegating more tasks and managing serial interrupters.
