I found the discussions with the others in the group about real life problems / achievements leading our teams was really valuable. I have been able to substantially achieve my workplace project (which encompassed 2 win-win goals and this is a task which I commenced 4 years ago but couldn’t seem to progress. The results of this project have been utilised to satisfy the requirements of the Chief Accountant. I have learned a lot about my leadership style and how to adapt my style to suit the needs of different situations and team members. The best idea from the Course were the weekly team meetings.

Most enjoyable aspects of the course was learning how the other half live….learning from Managers perspective. Realising what responsibilities & obligations are involved with team leading. How important goal setting is, having a target & then a process of focus…feel a lot more aware of what I need to do & than strive to achieve it. I was able to take this back to my personal life as well….my veggie garden has never looked so good! By goal setting, I was able to accomplish everything I needed to, to complete my course. Also realise the importance of better communications in the workplace, so that everyone can speak more freely & know that their input is very crucial…as part of a team, part of successful business.

The group discussions were very beneficial as the provided ideas that you may not think of yourself (i.e. how other people deal with different situations/problems, achievements people have made by adopting principles from the course etc.). The course helped provide the focus on my workplace project that was required to complete it in the timeframe available.

I think the course is structured well, not only have the modules been educational, but through practical assignments has helped me improve my management style in all areas. Each module provides handy tools and is a great reference for the future. I have been forced to confront my discomfort in giving feedback by recognising the importance of it, and now feel much more comfortable doing so. I have structured my week to include time for all high payoff activities. I have identified a list of business goals to improve the performance and effectiveness of our team. I have changed the format of our toolbox meetings to incorporate better planning sessions, feedback and suggestions for improvements. I am now in the habit of prioritising important and imperative actions for the day.

My development as a professional was the best outcome of the course for me. Professional work behaviour is very important to me and I hope some of my improved professionalism can rub off on others. The other major impact of the course for me was the realisation that tools, procedures and formal arrangements are required to effectively lead. For example, team motivation, continuous improvement effective delegation etc. do not just happen because you are a good leader! These happen because of careful planning, thoughtfulness and the use of proven techniques and tools. I want to kick the match winning goals and make the big changes and this course has helped me.
